History of Warwick Racecourse
The racecourse at Warwick is one of the oldest in the UK, dating back to 1694 in the late Stuart period. Located to the west of Warwick Castle, it is famous for becoming the first racecourse to have jump racing in its programme.
Though the first race at this site took place in 1707, it was not until 1808 that the first stand was built. Parts of that stand remain today, despite the many redevelopments that have taken place over the years, with the latest coming in 2018.
Warwick became one of The Jockey Club Racecourses in 1967 and in the same year, the legendary Red Rum ran on the Flat at the track. The Classic Chase was first run here as the Brooke Bond Oxo in 1974.
In 1991 Warwick added the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase. It takes its name from Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, of Wars of the Roses fame.
Is Warwick Races Today Jumps or Flat?
In 2014 it was decided that Warwick Racecourse would concentrate on National Hunt racing, after a long history of hosting both disciplines. The catalyst was a fatal injury suffered by Artful Lady on the Flat, so a jumps only programme started in 2015.
It is a left-handed track with tight turns and a short-run in from the final fence or flight of hurdles to the line. A complete circuit of the track is 1m 5f round (more than a mile-and-a-half, but not as far as a mile-and-three-quarters).
Hurdle races at Warwick are run on the old Flat course, on the inner or outside. There are eight flights on a full lap of these horse racing tracks, with three jumps after the winning post, before turning into the back straight. Then there are three more down the back, with the last two after you come into the home straight.
For steeplechases, Warwick races today has 10 fences on a complete circuit. There is a line of three fences after the winning post but before turning down the back. The middle one of these is an open ditch.
There are a further five fences in the back straight. The second in line is another ditch. That leaves just two plain fences after turning for home before the line.
With this being a tight track this is a track that favours speed and front runners tend to thrive. It’s hard to come from behind and this is something that we consider when producing our tips for Warwick.
Another factor that we pay particular attention to when giving Warwick racing tips today is the weather. The course lies on a clay subsoil that drains slowly. It gets testing in wet weather, then, and heavy going conditions are not unusual.
Key Warwick Races Fixtures
The action takes place at Warwick in the traditional jumps season period of September through to May, with just the summer off. Throughout this period we will have you covered with our Warwick horse tips.
It is a key venue in the Midlands, alongside Leicester races to the Northeast. There are other courses closer to Warwick, however, like Stratford and Worcester.

The Biggest Races We Have Warwick Tips On

Classic Chase
This is a Premier Handicap chase dating back to 1974 over 3m 5f in January. It’s the big betting race of the entire season in the West Midlands and was previously the Warwick National.
Due to the time of year it takes place, the race has been abandoned 14 times. One For Arthur landed this en route to Grand National glory in 2017.
Emma Lavelle has won the Classic Chase three times between 2014 and 2024 including with My Silver Lining at horse racing odds of 17/2. That mare picked up almost £57,000 for first prize in the latest edition of the race.
Hampton Novices’ Chase
A Grade 2 novice chase run in January on the Classic Chase card over three miles. It is a trial for the Broadway Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham. First run in 2004, it earned promotion from Listed status in 2020.
When abandoned in 2025, the race was restaged at Windsor later in January when Jingko Blue won. In 2024, the last edition at Warwick, Grey Dawning took first prize of £43.200.
Kingmakers Novices’ Chase
A Grade 2 novice chase run in February over two miles. It is the last of the Cheltenham Festival trials for the Arkle Challenge Trophy.
First run in 1991, notable winners include Flagship Uberalles, Long Run and Jonbon. The first prize in 2025 was £42,700 and won by L’Eau Du Sud, who came fourth in the Arkle in a blanket finish.
Warwick Mares’ Hurdle
This is a Listed race for mares only over 2m 5f on the Kingmaker card in February. Notable winners include dual scorer Glens Melody (2014 and 2015) and Marie’s Rock (2022).
First prize in 2025 was £17,165, taken home by 12/1 outsider Royale Margaux after You Wear It Well fell at the final flight in front.
Lady Godiva Mares’ Novices’ Chase
A Listed mares only novice chase held in December over 2m 4f. The race was first held in 2016 and had a first prize of almost £17,100 in 2024 when Cherie D’Am won.
