History of Uttoxeter Racecourse

Situated in the Staffordshire countryside, racing in the area was first held at nearby Keele Park. When that ceased operations, Uttoxeter Racecourse opened in 1907 by a company that was formed to take over their licence.

The early history of the track suffered from disruptions caused by global conflict. Horse racing was suspended throughout the UK during World War I, with racing resuming at Uttoxeter in 1921.

Then during World War II, the War Department requisitioned the land of the course. It wasn’t until 1952 that racing returned to Uttoxeter, with a crowd of 12,000 highlighting the popularity of the decision.

This is a track steeped in racing history, with Aintree Grand National winners such as Rag Trade and Lord Gyllene having previously featured in the Midlands Grand National. It was also the scene of AP McCoy’s 1700th win in 2002, when he broke the record for the most jumps wins for a jockey.

Is Uttoxeter Races Today Jumps or Flat?

Uttoxeter races today

Only National Hunt race meetings take place at Uttoxeter. It’s a left-handed, undulating course, which is on the turn for much of a full lap. A complete circuit is just over a mile-and-a-quarter.

There is a chute for 2m hurdle races and steeplechases which joins the home straight where it meets the round course. There are only five hurdles on a full lap, unless it’s a 2m hurdle race when there are six.

Steeplechases have eight fences per complete circuit, with the second of four in the home straight being an open ditch. Horses run around Uttoxeter three times in the feature Midlands Grand National.

The back straight isn’t particularly straight, as it features a dog leg turn partway along. When ground conditions are favourable it suits prominent runners that like to travel on the bridle.

Yet when there are more testing conditions at this race track during the winter months, it can become quite gruelling and stamina is a virtue. These are factors that we consider when producing our Uttoxeter tips today.

Thankfully, our horse racing tips for Uttoxeter do not have to take into account any draw bias. We find that this course is generally fair, regardless of where horses jump off.

Midlands Grand National

This 4m 2f Premier Handicap Chase features total prize money of £160,000. Apart from the Grand National, this is the second longest race in the UK.

Summer Cup

The Summer Cup is a 3m 2f Class 2 handicap chase. It is held in late June or early July each year.  This used to have Listed status and dates back to 2000 when it was the Summer National.

Originally run over 4 miles, then dropped back to 3 1/2 miles in 2009, the Summer Cup finally settled on its current distance in 2012. The £39,000 first prize for this steeplechase went to Hang In There in 2024.

Clarke Chase

Previously run over two miles, this Class 2 handicap chase became a 2m 4f race in 2016. Run for the Sir Stanley & Lady Clarke Challenge Trophy, it honours the benefactor of Uttoxeter.

The Clarke Chase featured a first prize of £20,800 in 2024 when 12/1 shot Your Darling won. That result that went against most Uttoxeter race tips.
