As the biggest race of the year arrives, RacingTipster have done an exclusive study on the luckiest jockey colours (silks) to bet on for the 2025 Grand National.
When carrying out this study, we assessed each Grand National winner from the 21st century and found ‘Green and Yellow’ to have the highest percentage of wins (26%).
The said ‘Green and Yellow’ silks are most recognisably attributed to Britain’s leading owner JP McManus who has owned the winner of the race three times.
McManus first won the National with Don’t Push It in 2010, before Minella Times was successful in 2021. The Irishman also owned last year’s winner I Am Maximus – who looks for a repeat bid this year.
Hemmings Racing-owned horses also sport ‘Green and Yellow’ silks winning the race three times. (Hedgehunter 2005, Ballabriggs 2011, Many Clouds 2015). Interestingly, there will be no horses in this year’s Grand National owned by Hemmings Racing for the first time in a while.

The Luckiest Horses To Bet On Based On Age
When betting on the Grand National, age is a huge factor to consider and we’re on hand to reveal the stats and trends.
Horses aged 8 and 9 have the highest percentage of wins in the 21st century for the Grand National. And in the 2025 race, two of the leading hopes in the race I AM MAXIMUS and STUMPTOWN are aged 9 and 8 respectively. 8 and 9 year olds have the same strike rate in the race (26%) – so they could be two worth backing on the day.
It’s worth mentioning that IROKO is aged 7 and is well fancied in the market and whilst he will run in Green and Yellow colours, the age stats are not in his favour. Only one seven-year-old has won the National in the 21st century, and just two have won it since 1940 (4.3%).

- Stumptown – green and yellow, aged 8

Commentary
Liam Solomon, spokesperson of CasinoApps had his say on the data: “The Grand National is undoubtedly the most exciting horse race of the year and millions of people nationwide like to have a bet on it. According to our study on colours and age, the most likely winner may well be Stumptown. But I Am Maximus also fits the trends and will look to win the race for a second year in a row.”
