History of Newmarket Racecourse

When still Prince of Wales in 1641, the future King Charles II saw Newmarket heath as an ideal place for horse racing. Following the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration of the Monarchy, he returned 25 years later still holding that vision.

Founding the Newmarket Town Plate in 1666, this is the only one of the Newmarket races today run on a round course. Charles II laid down formal Articles, which all modern Rules of Racing can trace their descent from.

Fast forward to the early Nineteenth Century, and the 2000 Guineas had its inaugural edition in 1809. A similar race for fillies only, the 1000 Guineas, followed five years later. These, alongside the St Leger at Doncaster races, and The Derby and The Oaks on Epsom Downs became known as the Classic races.

And so the sport continued here for another 100 years with other top-tier races like the Dewhurst Stakes and July Cup established in the mid-1870s. In 1914, however, Newmarket Racecourse became the official home of the Royal Flying Corps with the outbreak of the First World War.

Amazingly, horse racing didn’t stop, though. Again converted to an airbase for RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War, Newmarket played its part in the defeat of Axis powers. By 1974, the track became one of the leading Jockey Club Racecourses. It remains a huge equine and racing hub to this day,

Is Newmarket Races Today Flat or Jumps?

It’s Flat racing events only at Newmarket. Due to the sheer size of the heath and volume of meetings, however, there are not one but two race tracks here.

Used at different times of year, these are the Rowley Mile in springtime and autumn, and July Course over the summer. Each track races right-handed for long-distance events, but has undulations especially in the lengthy home straights. Both deserve greater explanation.

Newmarket Rowley Mile Course

Both the Newmarket Classics and most of the venue’s Group 1 races take place on the Rowley Mile. Used in April, May, September, October and sometimes November, this track has a break from racing during summertime.

The Newmarket Rowley Mile course is actually a mile-and-a-quarter long. Contests beyond that distance run round a bend from what they call the Beacon Course with autumn handicap races like the Old Rowley Cup and Cesarewitch notable examples.

Once into the home straight on the Rowley Mile, there is a steady rise in the ground until a clump of bushes a quarter of a mile from the winning post. The penultimate furlong is then downhill, but the last uphill again, creating a dip that can unbalance horses at the business end of a race.

Newmarket July Course

As it name suggests, Newmarket races today in July, but also adjacent months of June and August on a different track. This allows the Rowley Mile to have a mid-season break from its regular races.

The July Course is even more undulating than the other track and uses the Bunbury Mile for its home straight. This is sharply uphill for the first couple of furlongs, then downhill for its middle portion before climbing again to the line.

Any middle or long-distance races on the Newmarket July Course like the Bahrain Trophy go into a dip down from the Beacon Course before joining the Bunbury Mile as the home turn. This asks different questions of horses than the Rowley Mile.

Key Newmarket Races Fixtures

Whichever course the action unfolds on, five meetings are of particular interest for horse racing tips from Newmarket today. Starting with the Craven Meeting in April, where horses warm up for the Classics, there is then the Guineas Festival, July Festival, Cambridgeshire Meeting and Dubai Future Champions Festival as standout fixtures.

Craven Meeting

During mid-April, there are three consecutive midweek days of action on the Rowley Mile. Chief among Newmarket tips from this fixture are finding winners of Classic Trials in the Nell Gwyn Stakes for fillies and Craven Stakes for colts and geldings.

Both are Group 3 Flat races for three-year-olds, but there is also action for older horses across the racecards too. Look out for sprinters in the Abernant Stakes and middle-distance types in the Earl Of Sefton.

Guineas Festival

At the beginning of May, there’s another three-day meeting at Newmarket Racecourse where the first Classics happen. Friday at this fixture is low key with the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes the main race.

Saturday is when the colts tackle the 2000 Guineas. Also look out for Group 3 sprinting action with the Palace House Stakes and the Suffolk Stakes on the handicap front.

Sunday at the Guineas Festival is all about the fillies with the 1000 Guineas. Supporting this is the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes for older females. Check out every race from each day below:

Newmarket July Festival

The only major meeting of Newmarket races today on the July Course is the eponymous July Festival. This is yet another three-day fixture over the Thursday, Friday and Saturday following the Eclipse at Sandown races the previous weekend.

Newmarket racing tips tend to focus on the Group 1s with the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes for fillies and mares over the Bunbury Mile on Friday. Saturday is all about the July Cup, meanwhile. Supported by the Superlative Stakes and the Bunbury Cup, sprinting comes to the fore.

Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting

Come late September, there’s another three-day fixture at Headquarters. Although the Cambridgeshire Handicap is the big betting race of the meeting for those providing Newmarket tips today, Group 1 action on a loaded Saturday card involves juveniles.

The major pattern races here are the Cheveley Park Stakes and Middle Park Stakes. Other earlier days of the Cambridgeshire Meeting don’t have quite the same quality, but can still prove informative for the future.

Dubai Future Champions Festival

Last but not least among the major meetings of Newmarket races today is the Future Champions Festival in October. Just two days instead of three like the other big fixtures, there’s a Group 1 Flat race for juveniles on each card.

Friday at the Future Champions Festival is all about the Fillies’ Mile. Supported by the Old Rowley Cup, there are plenty more Group juvenile contests too. Saturday has the Dewhurst Stakes headlining with the Cesarewitch Handicap acting as the big betting race of the meeting.

July Cup Newmarket Tips

Established in 1876, this 6f sprint is one of the big Flat horse races of the division and entire summer. It won’t be a massive shock to readers to learn that the July Cup takes place on the July Course on the third and final day of the eponymous July Festival on the second Saturday of that month.

No other Newmarket races today can match the prize money on offer here. The July Cup roll of honour includes famous sprinters like Abernant, Anabaa, Oasis Dream, Starspangledbanner and Harry Angel. As it’s open to horses aged three and up, there’s a clash between generations that you don’t see at Royal Ascot because of separate races.

The younger horses 6lb receive weight for age from their elders, so Newmarket races tips must consider that. First prize in 2024 was £340,260 and connections of Mill Stream took home the money.

1000 Guineas Tips

A Classic race for three-year-olds fillies over the Rowley Mile on Sunday of the Guineas Festival in May. Dating back to 1814, it is one of the most prestigious females only event in the sport of horse racing anywhere in the world.

Sceptre, Pretty Polly, Diadem, Rockfel, Sun Chariot, Musidora, Meld, Oh So Sharp, Salsabil and Bosra Sham are just some of the famous winners of the 1000 Guineas. While it’s not unusual for outsiders to win it with Billesdon Brook and Elmalka recent examples, top Newmarket tips should factor in both strong juvenile form from the previous season and face fitness into calculations.

The 1000 Guineas had a first prize of over £311,000 in 2025. That money went to Godolphin and their retained trainer Charlie Appleby, who saddled the 2024 Fillies’ Mile winner Desert Flower to yet more success on the Rowley Mile.

Dewhurst Stakes

A year before the July Cup had its inaugural running, there was the founding of another Group 1 race at Newmarket. The Dewhurst Stakes, open only to juvenile colts has long been established as one of the best two-year-old events of the season.

Run in October on the Saturday of the Dubai Future Champions Festival, it is a 7f contest that fillies of that age can also take part in. That is if they don’t tackle the Fillies Mile the day before.

Many future champions have won the Dewhurst Stakes with Ormonde, Hyperion, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Rock Of Gibraltar, Shamardal, Sir Percy and Frankel all particularly famous examples. Any tips for Newmarket today should only consider the very best juveniles, then, and victors are definitely horses to follow the following season.

Shadow Of Light added his name to that illustrious roster when winning the Dewhurst Stakes in 2024. He picked up almost £300,000 in prize money while he was at it.

2000 Guineas Tips

From 1809 onwards, Newmarket Racecourse has hosted Classics. Although those other events in the series from Doncaster and Epsom races predate the 2000 Guineas, the Rowley Mile contest for three-year-old colts (and fillies) is the first each Flat season in chronological order with it taking place on the first Saturday in May.

As with the 1000 Guineas the day after, Newmarket horse tips weigh up both talents who go well fresh and those with runs under their belts here. Among the 2000 Guineas roll of honour, you’ll find equine stars like Gladiateur, Nijinsky, Brigadier Gerard, Sea The Stars, Frankel, Camelot and many others.

Ruling Court, who had already had a run, like Notable Speech the year before, picked up the £297,727 first prize in 2024 for the same connections. Newmarket local trainer Charlie Appleby once again produced the goods from nearby Moulton Paddocks.

Fillies Mile

A Group 1 since 1990, this juvenile fillies only event hasn’t always been at Newmarket races today. Previously at Ascot for almost 40 years, it switched tracks in 2011 and has since become part of the Dubai Future Champions Festival in October.

Run as the feature race on the Friday of this fixture, past winners include Height Of Fashion, Oh So Sharp, Bosra Sham, Minding and Laurens. It acts as an end of season trial on the Rowley Mile for the following year’s 1000 Guineas.

Newmarket racing tips have lots of juvenile races both at Headquarters and elsewhere to consider as form lines for the Fillies’ Mile. Doncaster’s May Hill Stakes, also run over a Straight Mile course, for example, could provide clues.

For fillies based in the Emerald Isle, the Moyglare Stud Stakes from the Curragh races at the Irish Champions Festival might hold the answer. The £283,550 first prize in 2024 went to Desert Flower, who followed-up in the 2025 1000 Guineas.

Cheveley Park Stakes

More Group 1 juvenile fillies action now, but over 6f and at the Cambridgeshire Meeting towards the end of September. Dating back to 1899, fewer institutions have supported thoroughbred horse racing longer than Cheveley Park Stud after which this race takes its name.

Like the Fillies’ Mile, this is an autumn Classic trial for the following season’s 1000 Guineas. Newmarket horse racing tips should consider the results of the Lowther Stakes from York races the previous month and the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes on the July Course here over the summer. There are also Listed trials for this both here and elsewhere.

Champion juvenile filly Lake Victoria won the Cheveley Park Stakes in some style despite a swift turnaround from landing the Moyglare Stud in her native Ireland in 2024. She scooped first prize of almost £165,350 in the process before Breeders’ Cup glory across the Atlantic in America.

Middle Park Stakes

Restricted to juvenile colts only, this is the other Group 1 race again over 6f on the Cambridgeshire card in late September. The Middle Park Stakes is older than the Cheveley Park with its inaugural edition taking place in 1866.

Initially open to horses of either gender, legendary fillies Pretty Polly and Sun Chariot are notable early winners. Among the successful colts are Dante, Abernant, Bold Lad, Brigadier Gerard, Rodrigo De Triano, Oasis Dream, Dutch Art and Dark Angel.

When creating Newmarket tips for the Middle Park, results from events like the Gimcrack Stakes at York, Richmond Stakes from Glorious Goodwood races and July Stakes here all come under consideration. With the same £165,350 first prize as the Cheveley Park in 2024, the money went to Shadow Of Light, who held off Whistlejacket.

Falmouth Stakes

Currently the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, this Group 1 open to fillies and mares aged three and up takes place on the Bunbury Mile and July Course on the middle day of the July Festival. It marks the first time over this distance and at the highest level that different generations of female thoroughbreds can take each other on.

First run in 1911, the Falmouth Stakes opened to older fillies and mares in 1974. Sonic Lady, Soviet Song and Goldkiova are perhaps its most famous winners. First prize in 2024 was almost £156,000 with Porta Fortuna successful.

Sun Chariot Stakes

Last of the Group 1 contests now and on the Rowley Mile at the beginning of October. Sun Chariot was a famous filly from the Second World War period landing the Triple Crown in 1942. Like the Falmouth Stakes, the races that honours here is open to fillies and mares aged three and up.

Sun Chariot Newmarket races today tips need to look back over all other Group 1s at the track (including the July Course) over the past 12 months for form clues. Established in 1966 over a mile-and-a-quarter, then later opened to older females in 1974, by 2009 it was down to just a one-mile race.

Since that change, Sky Lantern and Laurens are big name winners. The Sun Chariot Stakes carried prize money of nearly £156,000 in 2024, which went to Tamfana.

Bahrain Trophy Stakes

A recognised trial race for the St Leger holding Group 3 status over 1m 5f on the opening day of the July Festival. Only three-year-olds can run in the Bahrain Trophy with famous winners including Persian Punch, Youmzain and Yibir since its inauguration in 1991.

Charlie Appleby has an excellent recent record in this race with Ancient Wisdom enhancing that in 2024. He scooped the £110,340 prize money for first place then, giving the trainer a third win in the Bahrain Trophy in four seasons.

Tattersalls October Auction Stakes

Now, for something completely different. A Sales Race over 6f for juveniles on Sun Chariot day at the beginning of October where the price horses fetched at the Tattersalls October Auction as yearlings reflects the weights on their backs.

There are similar Sales Races at York and Doncaster, and across the Irish Sea. First prize in 2024 for winning the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes was £91,250.

Ceasrewitch Handicap

A two-mile, two-furlong race with Heritage Handicap status open to horses aged three and up on the Saturday of the Dubai Future Champions Festival in October. This long-distance event dates back to 1839 and is the longest of all races under Rules at the track.

The Cesarewitch Course only has one bend where it joins the Rowley Mile. Given the amount of stamina needed by successful horses, many National Hunt trainers target the race. Vintage Crop, who went on to Melbourne Cup glory in Australia, is the most famous winner of this event by some way.

Newmarket race tips cannot underestimate the necessary staying power required to land the Cesarewitch. Alphonse Le Grande won it in 2024, then survived initial disqualification with his jockey adjudged to have broken whip rules and became reinstated on appeal. Connections eventually received the over £90,000 in first place prize money.

Cambridgeshire Handicap

Also dating back to 1839 is another big-field Heritage Handicap run at then end of September over a mile and a furlong. The Cambridgeshire Handicap reflects the fact that Newmarket Racecourse straddles both that county and Suffolk.

Open to horses aged three and up like the Cesarewich, progressive types often win it. Lord North is a famous recent example of a Cambridgeshire winner who went on to bigger and better things in international races.

This is about as tricky as it gets for experts and the AI with Newmarket tips, because up to 34 runners take part. Liberty Lane won in 2024 and received more than £90,000 in prize money for his effort.

Challenge Stakes

First run in 1878 and open to horses in training of all ages, for much of its history this was a 6f sprint. The Group 2 Challenge Stakes underwent some changes in the 1970s and 1980s, however. First, it increased to its current distance of 7f in 1977.

Later, the race closed to two-year-olds in 1985, thus more resembling what we know it as today. Diadem, Royal Charger, Boldboy, Selkirk and Limato are some famous winners of the Challenge Stakes. Topgear made a successful raid on the race from France in 2024, snatching first prize of almost £71,000.

Dahlia Stakes

A Group 2 race for older fillies and mares on the 1000 Guineas card on the first Sunday in May. It honours Dahlia, a wonder-mare from the 1970s. Unlike the fillies’ Classic, this event takes place over a mile and a furlong.

Introduced in 1997, the object of the Dahlia Stakes was to act as an incentive to keep older females in training. A Pattern of middle-distance races for that express purpose has continued to develop over the next 30 years.

Newmarket racing tips today should always consider course form as key for the Dahlia, but also proven stamina. It is a very stiff nine furlongs as the race is all on the Rowley Mile course. Cinderella’s Dream triumphed in 2025, earning prize money of nearly £71,000 in the process.

Jockey Club Stakes

The feature race on the opening day of the Guineas Festival, usually the first Friday in May. A Group 2 contest for older horses over a mile-and-a-half, it’s named after The Jockey Club who own Newmarket Racecourse.

Inaugurated in 1894 and then run in the autumn over a mile-and-a-quarter, this became a long-distance race at a mile-and-three-quarters in Edwardian time. In 1963, however, the Jockey Club Stakes closed to three-year-olds and moved to the spring, settling on its current distance.

Notable winners include Sceptre, Toboggan, Ardross, Silver Patriarch and Shirocco. First prize in 2025 was around £71,000 when Bellum Justum won, continuing a recent trend of shock results in the race.

Joel Stakes

More Group 2 action, but from the Friday of the Cambridgeshire Meeting in September. Initially the Main Reef Stakes, this mile race for three-year-olds and up later took the name of that horse’s trainer Jim Joel.

Benbatl and Kameko are the most famous winners of the contest, so big names do run in it sometimes. Prague picked up almost £71,000 in prize money for his shock success in the Joel Stakes of 2024.

Princess Of Wales’s Stakes

Established in 1894 and initially run over a mile, this middle-distance Group 2 for three-year-olds and up acts the feature race on the opening day of the July Festival. By 1902, Newmarket reinvented this contest as a mile-and-a-half race.

Blandford, Solario, Fairway, Height Of Fashion, Shantou, Millenary and Big Orange are all notable winners of the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes. Giavellotto added his name to the roll of honour in 2024, receiving nearly £71,000 in prize money.

Royal Lodge Stakes

Run at Ascot until 2011, this Group 2 on the Rowley Mile for juvenile colts and geldings is one of the chief supporting races on the Saturday of the Cambridgeshire Meeting. It serves as a trial for the following season’s Classics.

High-profile winners of the Royal Lodge include Black Tarquin, St. Paddy, Royal Palace, Shirley Heights, Benny The Dip, Frankel and Roaring Lion. Picking up about £71,000 for first place in 2024 was Wimbledon Hawkeye.

Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes

Inaugurated in 1947 as the Cherry Hinton Stakes, this Group 2 for juvenile fillies over 6f takes place on the Friday of the July Festival. It became the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes in 2013 following the marriage of Prince William to Catherine Middleton.

Sweet Solera, Forest Flower and Attraction are perhaps the most famous winners of this race. Arabian Dusk triumphed in 2024, receiving £56,700 in prize money for her effort.

July Stakes

Dating all the way back to 1786, this Group 2 for juvenile colts and geldings over 6f is one of the oldest Pattern races for two-year-olds in the programme book. As its name suggests, the July Stakes takes place during the July Festival on the opening day of the fixture.

Originally open to juveniles of both sexes, it closed to fillies and became a males only race in 1977. Famous winners of the July Stakes include Sceptre, Fairway and Green Desert. Whistlejacket added his name to those successful in 2024 and picked up prize money of £56,700.

Rockfel Stakes

Even more juvenile Group 2 action, but this one is for fillies over 7f on the middle day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting in September. Established in 1981, it honours Rockfel, who won two Classics in 1938. Bubbling took home first prize of £56,700 with her in 2024.

Superlative Stakes

The last of the juvenile Group 2s now with this one over 7f on the third and final day of the July Festival. Dubawi, Master Of The Seas and City Of Troy are all winners of the Superlative Stakes in modern time. Ancient Truth emerged victorious in 2024, taking £56,700 in prize money home.

Bunbury Cup

Also on the Saturday of the July Festival, is this Heritage Handicap over 7f for three-year-olds and up. It remembers Sir Charles Bunbury, a senior steward of The Jockey Club who founded the Guineas. Over £51,500 went to the winner Aalto in 2024.

Old Rowley Cup

A three-year-olds only mile-and-a-half Heritage Handicap on the Friday of the Dubai Future Champions Festival in October. Sun God defied a low draw to win in 2024 and claim first prize of more than £51,500.

Suffolk Stakes

This is the springtime equivalent of the Cambridgeshire Handicap. It uses the same mile and a furlong course and distance on 2000 Guineas day in May. Open to three-year-olds and up, Fox Legacy struck in 2025 and received over £51,500 in prize money for the win.
