History of Newbury Racecourse

Horse racing in the county of Berkshire predates any action at Newbury by almost a century. Much closer to London are Ascot races established by Queen Anne towards the end of the Stuart dynasty.

Fast forward to 1805 and Enborne Heath outside Newbury hosted a two-day fixture. Just six years later, this transferred to Woodhay Heath. By the early 20th century, training yards had been established at Kingsclere, Lambourn and Wantage.

Porter’s genius was recognising land by the Great Western Railway line and River Kennett could make a racecourse. These same meadows are the site of Newbury races today near Greenham. The Jockey Club wasn’t keen on the idea at first, however.

Officials felt when hearing proposals in 1903 that there were enough racecourses in Britain already. In those days, there were plenty more horse racing circuits and tracks than we have now. Disappointed by what the senior stewards said, Porter left dejected.

As luck would have it, as he left The Jockey Club headquarters near Newmarket races, he bumped into King Edward VII in the town’s High Street. Like so many monarchs before and after him, he was passionate about horse racing.

The King liked Porter’s plan a lot and, all of a sudden, Jockey Club stewards and officials changed their minds. By the autumn of 1905, Newbury Racecourse opened its gates complete with a brand new railway station close by. It’s a lesson in the power of royal patronage.

Is Newbury Races Today Jumps or Flat?

One of the great things about horse racing tips for Newbury, is the track has both jumps and Flat races at it. As a dual-purpose racecourse, it hosts events all year round.

A complete circuit of this left-handed, relatively level oval track is just over a mile-and-a-three-quarters. The long back stretch and home straight mean the round course suits galloping types.

This is because of a water jump, adjacent to the winning post that horses take before going out on their final circuit. Elsewhere, there are five fences in the back straight with the second of these an open ditch.

Horses must then negotiate the cross fence part way around the home turn. In the final stretch before the winning post, there are four more jumps with the second of these another ditch. Jockeys must gather their mounts on the run-in to the line, so they don’t end up taking the water again.

Lockinge Stakes

The only Group 1 race at Newbury. Inaugurated in 1958, this straight mile feature race at the track in May was open to three-year-olds until 1995. With high-quality fields assured, this is a way for older milers to have a run before Royal Ascot and the Queen Anne or Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

Among the legendary Flat thoroughbreds to have won the Lockinge are Brigadier Gerard, Selkirk, Cape Cross, Medicean, Paco Boy, Frankel and Night Of Thunder. John & Thady Gosden have won three of the last five editions, so anything their top Newmarket yard saddles in the race must get a second look.

Those who followed Newbury race tips on Lead Artist from this stable had their reward. He came on a bundle for his Sandown Mile outing on reappearance and scooped £226,840 in prize money. Dancing Gemini and Rosallion filled the Lockinge places in-behind Lead Artist.

Coral Gold Cup

Best known as the Hennessy Gold Cup and then briefly the Ladbrokes Trophy, this three-and-a-quarter miles Premier Handicap Chase moved to Newbury Racecourse from Cheltenham races in 1960. It takes place on the last Saturday in November on the second day of the Winter Carnival.

Mandarin, the inaugural winner from 1957, delivered again in 1961, making him the only horse to win the event at different venues. Mill House and Arkle gave this race almost immediate credibility with victories in it in the first half of the 1960s.

The latter twice carried 12st 7lb to victory around Newbury. Spanish Steps, Diamond Edge, Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad, Playschool, One Man, Teeton Mill, Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River all appear on the roll of honour.

Recent winners of the Coral Gold Cup have found those hoofprints too big to fill. Despite that, it remains a prestigious race and Newbury racing tips for the Winter Carnival centre on this. Kandoo Kid picked up the £142,375 first prize in 2024 as trainer Paul Nicholls won it for a fourth time in his career.

Weatherbys Super Sprint

They partnered the race for a dozen years before William Hill took over.  A talented novice hurdler often takes aim at this extended two-mile contest, which explains why so many horses aged five or six win it.

By far the most famous name on its roll of honour, however, is Persian War, who carried 11st 13lb to victory in 1968. Any successful Newbury races today tips probably won’t unearth such a superstar, but should instead focus on unexposed, potentially still well-handicapped types.

Local Lambourn trainer Nicky Henderson has saddled seven winners of this valuable race. Landing Light and My Tent Or Yours are the most notable, but he’s also captured first place with Iberico Lord and Joyeuse also for powerful owner JP McManus in recent years. The latter mare won £87,200 for an easy success in 2025.

Hungerford Stakes

A Group 2 over the specialists’ distance of seven furlongs and open to three-year-olds and up in August. Originally a mile-and-a-half race when first run in 1949, it soon changed to its current distance. This honours Hungerford, a nearby town to Newbury.

Switching from the Round Course and its chute to the Straight track in 2002, the race now faces a serious challenge. The European Pattern Committee promoted the City Of York Stakes during the Ebor Festival the following weekend to a Group 1.

How this impacts the Hungerford Stakes and Newbury horse tips on this race remains to be seen. Famous winners include Chic, Paco Boy and Lethal Force. Tiber Flow won it in 2024 and scooped almost £71,000 in prize money in the process.

Mill Reef Stakes

Replacing the Crookham Stakes in 1972, this Group 2 for juveniles over six furlongs in September honours locally trained equine legend Mill Reef. It is historically one of the better two-year-old races in the autumn.

Dark Angel and his son Harry Angel are sprinting stars who won this race. Around the time in the Flat season when the Mill Reef Stakes takes place, the weather can turn and it’s not unusual for some rain to hit the track.

All of the best Newbury tips bear this fact in mind. Ribchester is the most famous of Richard Fahey’s three winners in the race with Powerful Glory also landing it and the £61,360 first prize in 2024.

Goffs Hundred Grand Bumper

A National Hunt Flat race in late March now for horses aged four, five or six sold at Goffs auction. It has total prize money of £100,000, hence the title, and £59,000 of that goes to the winner every year.

Challow Novices’ Hurdle

The only set of Newbury race tips on a Grade 1, this extended two-and-a-half miles novice hurdle takes place between Christmas and New Year. Initially a juvenile hurdle, the Challow changed and opened up to older horses in 1981.

With the addition of other events like the Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow races to the programme, this closed to three-year-olds in 1999. Bindaree, Denman and Reve De Sivola are famous modern winners of the Challow Hurdle.

The New Lion landed it in 2024, scooping first prize of almost £57,000 for the Dan Skelton stable. He went on to break the so-called Challow curse of no winner going on to subsequent success during the Cheltenham Festival the following spring with more Grade 1 glory.

Greatwood Gold Cup

A Premier Handicap Chase over two-and-a-half miles in early March. Inaugurated in 2004, its proximity to the big Cheltenham races often impacts the quality of the field. Despite this, it had the same first prize money as the Challow Hurdle in 2025.

Aston Park Stakes

Before 2014, this Group 3 race for older horses on the Lockinge card in May used the same extended 1m 5f as the Geoffrey Freer. It was then shortened to a mile-and-a-half. Persian Punch, Telescope and Crystal Ocean are some of the Aston Park’s most famous winners.

The race takes its name from the Aston Park Stud, established in the neighbouring northern county of Oxfordshire. Eydon sprung a surprise when winning it in 2025 and received £56,700 for first place.

Greenham Stakes

A Group 3 Classic trial for three-year-old colts and geldings over seven furlongs on the Spring Trials Weekend in April. The Greenham dates back to 1906 and competing horses originally contested it at a mile. It switched to the Straight Course in 1956 after shortening in distance in 1949.

Given that winners go on to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, selections aren’t just tips for Newbury races today, but also worth following in the future. Mill Reef, Boldboy, Wollow, Danehill Dancer, Paco Boy, Frankel and Kingman are some of the great Greenham Stakes winners.

Adding his name to that illustrious roll of honour in 2025 was Jonquil. He picked up £56,700 in prize money for owner-breeders Juddmonte and trainer Andrew Balding in the process.

London Gold Cup

A Heritage Handicap only open to three-year-olds over a mile-and-a-quarter on Lockinge day in May. It often proves an informative guide to subsequent middle-distance handicaps as progressive types race in it and train on from it.

Time Test, Defoe, Communique and Bay Bridge are all recent examples of winners who developed from this Gold Cup race into Pattern performers. Saddadd scored in 2025 and earned £51,540 in prize money.

Geoffrey Freer Stakes

Group 3 action from Hungerford day in August now. As this race open to horses aged and up over an extended 1m 5f tests stamina, it can be a St Leger trial for youngsters.

It all depends if they can make the most of generous weight for age terms and win, then go on to Doncaster races for the final Classic of the season. Inaugurated in 1949 as the Oxfordshire Stakes, it soon changed its name to honour a former racecourse manager at Newbury.

Levmoss, Ardross, Silver Patriarch and Sixties Icon are some of the staying stars to have won the Geoffrey Freer down the years. Shadwell Estates have often owned the winner with course specialist Al Aasy another to carry their colours to victory and over £51,000 in prize money in 2024.

Denman Chase

First run in 2000 as the Aon Chase, this Grade 2 over an extended 2m 7f takes place on the Super Saturday card in February and acts as the final trial for the following month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The likes of Kauto Star, Denman himself from whom the race gets its current title, Coneygree and Native River have all won this and followed-up in the blue riband of steeplechasing.

That means any Newbury tips for today on the Denman Chase should be seriously considered for more success at the Cheltenham Festival. Venetia Williams saddled Djelo to victory in 2025 when first prize was £48,400.

Game Spirit Chase

A Grade 2 trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase also run on the Super Saturday fixture in February. Although this steeplechase over an extended two miles dates back to 1953, they renamed the race after Game Spirit, a horse who sadly died at Newbury in the 1970s.

It was a way of commemorating him. Pendil, Viking Flagship, Azertyuiop, Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre and three-time winner Altior all appear on the roll of honour. Master Chewy landed the Game Spirit Chase, which also had £48,400 in first place prize money in 2025.

Fred Darling Stakes

Established in 1949 as the Lambourn Stakes, this Group 3 Classic trial over seven furlongs for three-year-old fillies on Spring Trials Weekend soon became a race honouring late local trainer Fred Darling. Renamed in his honour in 1955, it switched from the Round to the Straight Course in 1999.

All Newbury racing tips today on the Fred Darling should also have one eye on potential 1000 Guineas fillies. Marwell, Salsabil, Bosra Sham and Alcohol Free are all famous winners. Duty First delivered in 2025 and received £48,200 in prize money as her reward.

Hackwood Stakes

A Group 3 sprint over six furlongs open to horses aged three and up on the Super Sprint card in July. Invincible Spirit, Pastoral Pursuits and The Tin Man are famous winners of the Hackwood. Elite Status won it in 2024 and scooped £48,200 in prize money for the Karl Burke stable.

John Porter Stakes

More Group 3 action now, but for older horses over a mile-and-a-half on Spring Trials Weekend. Inaugurated in 1928, this race honours John Porter who did so much to make Newbury races today what they are.

Initially using the same start as the Geoffrey Freer, only open to three-year-olds and run in September, it soon became a mile-and-a-quarter race in the 1930s. By 1949, the John Porter settled on its current guise and place in the programme as a middle-distance springtime event only for older horses.

Unfuwain and Harbinger are the race’s most famous winners. Andrew Balding mare Divina Grace was a surprise winner of the John Porter Stakes in 2025 when first place was worth £48,200 to her connections.

Dubai World Trophy

Previously the Marlborough Stakes and only open to three-year-olds, this Group 3 dash over the flying five furlongs is one of the chief supporting race on the Mill Reef card in September. It became the Dubai World Trophy in 1997 after opening to older horses in 1993.

Successful Newbury horse racing tips should focus on pure speedsters here, even though the going underfoot can be softer than over the summer. Mecca’s Angel is by some way the most famous winner of the Dubai World Trophy. No Half Measures captured the £48,200 first prize in 2024.

John Francome Novices’ Chase

Formerly the Hopeful Chase, Fulke Walwyn Novices’ Chase and most recently the Berkshire Novices’ Chase, this Grade 2 over two-and-a-half miles on the opening day of the Winter Carnival in December honours legendary jumps jockey John Francome. The old Worcester Novices’ Chase also used to be named after him before its discontinuation.

Remittance Man, Denman, Bobs Worth and Coneygree feature on this race’s roll of honour. The Jukebox Man won in 2024 for Ben Pauling when the prize money for victory was almost £43,000.

Fillies’ Trial Stakes

Originally the Sandleford Priory Stakes, this is a Listed trial race for middle-distance Classics like The Oaks at Epsom races and its French equivalent, the Prix de Diane, over a mile-and-a-quarter for three-year-old fillies on the Lockinge card in May. Newbury tips today that take the longer term view can pay off here.

That’s because recent famous winners like Sea Of Class and Nashwa went on to Group 1 victories later in their careers. Qilin Queen prevailed in 2025 and received over £42,500 in prize money.

St. Simon Stakes

Established in 1969 and named after the Victorian racehorse and sire of the same name, this mile-and-a-half Group 3 race for horses aged three and up is the big race at Newbury in October.

William Haggas and Ralph Beckett have been trainers to follow in this event recently. Max Vega won the St. Simon Stakes for a second time in 2024 and picked up over £42,500 for first place.

Mandarin Handicap Chase

A Class 2 handicap chase over the Coral Gold Cup course and distance of three-and-a-quarter miles on Challow Hurdle day in December. It honours Mandarin, the first-ever winner of that race.

All Newbury races tips must remember there is a maximum ratings ceiling of 145 for this event. Henry’s Friend ran fifth in the Coral Gold Cup, but found this less demanding contest more like it when he netted £39,000 in prize money for victory in the Mandarin.

Long Distance Hurdle

And finally, the feature race on the Friday of the Winter Carnival. A Grade 2 hurdles event over an extended three miles, long-time division kingpin Big Buck’s won a record four consecutive editions between 2009 and 2012.

Other multiple victors of the Long Distance Hurdle include Deano’s Beeno, Baracouda, Inglis Drever and Unowhatimeanharry. Despite attracting a small field in recent years, first place in 2024 was worth £34,638 with Strong Leader prevailing.

Other Newbury Races Today

We’ve just dealt with the most valuable contest put on at this track. Over jumps, punters should know about Listed races like the Charlie Nugent Memorial Mares’ Chase over 2m 7f in January, the Winter Bumper on Super Saturday, and fillies’ juvenile and mares’ novice hurdle races during the Winter Carnival.

Speaking of that meeting, the Gerry Feilden Hurdle is a Premier Handicap for those horses considered to have intermediate experience of the discipline. In late March, there is also a Grade 2 females only EBF National Hunt Mares’ Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle over an extended two-and-a-half miles.

On the Flat, meanwhile, look out for more Listed races in May, July and September in the Carnarvon Stakes, Steventon Stakes and Free Cup. Newbury also have a good programme of two-year-old races besides the Mill Reef. Into this category go more Listed events like the Rose Bowl in July, St Hugh’s Stakes during August and the Radley Stakes come October.

Group 3 action for juveniles in the Horris Hill Stakes also happens at the course’s Flat Finale. Other notable handicaps run on the level here include the Silver Bar, Spring Cup, Toronado Handicap, Mettal UK Handicap and Autumn Cup.
