Huntingdon Races Today – See Huntingdon Tips from Cambridgeshire Course

East of the East Midlands, but west of East Anglia, you’ll find Huntingdon races today in Cambridgeshire. Historically in the heart of the old ceremonial county of Huntingdonshire, it lies at something of a crossroads area between the cardinal points of the compass.

Arguably too far north to be considered as being truly in the south of Britain, not central enough to be part of the Midlands, nor eastern enough to fall in East Anglia, it perhaps seems a strange place to have a racecourse. And yet, there is heritage for this fine sport here. We can offer Huntingdon tips free of charge for all of their fixtures.

History of Huntingdon Racecourse

Following on from other tracks in the region like Wisbech, St Ives and, most famously of all Newmarket races, Brampton Racecourse near Huntingdon had its first meeting on Easter Monday 1886. Right from the very start, it has been all about jump race meetings here.

By the time of the Great Depression, this was the last National Hunt track still operating in the area. The Oakley Hunt at Kimbolton folded during the Edwardian period (1907) and Cottenham, also known as Cambridge Racecourse, closed to all but Point-to-Point fixtures by 1925.

Fast forward past the construction of the grandstand in 1953 to the end of the 1960s, and the flagship event among all Huntingdon races today, the Peterborough Chase, had its inaugural edition. The track’s other feature contest, the Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle, followed in 1976.

The Jockey Club acquired this venue in 1992, prior to its purchase of Epsom Downs. Since then, Huntingdon has won local awards when voted Best Small Racecourse for the South Midlands & East Anglia region in 2011 and again in 2014.

Since the closure of Towcester Racecourse, and with the exception of Leicester races, there isn’t another track that stages horse racing over jumps within a 70-mile radius. That lies to the northwest of Huntingdon, while further northeast National Hunt fans can take in this code of racing at Fakenham in Norfolk.

Is Huntingdon Races Today Flat or Jumps?

Huntingdon races today

Huntingdon Racecourse stages jump fixtures only with 18 race days each calendar year. The track is an oval shaped, right-handed course which, although it suits some galloping types, has relatively flat and level topography. A complete circuit is about a mile-and-a-half round.

Each race passes the winning post more than once at Huntingdon, even the junior National Hunt Flat races, also known as bumpers. There are five flights to cross on a full lap in hurdle races. Two of these come down the back, then a cross hurdle on the home turn and two more in the finishing straight.

There are some tricky jumps on the steeplechase circuit, meanwhile. This is due to the unique layout of Huntingdon races today with nine fences on a full lap, the first of which comes shortly past the winning post as an open ditch. Before turning into the back straight, there is also a plain fence.

Once down the far side of the course, there’s a line of five fences. The second of these is a water jump and the penultimate another ditch. That just leaves two more plain fences in the home straight before the line. There is a short run-in on both the hurdle course and chase track.

Key Huntingdon Races Fixtures & Meetings

Most fixtures at Huntingdon fall with the main horseracing season for jumps. They race from October until May, taking the summer off when racing tips focus more on the Flat anyway. As noted above, there are 18 race days each year and we provide a full Huntingdon tips service for them all.

Chief among all the horse racing meetings from this venue is their Peterborough Chase day on a Sunday in early December. This is the only graded event at Huntingdon races today. On a Friday in early February, meanwhile, they have the Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle card.

One of three races with Listed status at the course, this day of action now also includes the Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase. With Black Type on offer for the females taking part, our betting tips for Huntingdon feature some decent horses running around the track in preparation for the Cheltenham Festival or other spring targets.

The Biggest Jumps Racing We Have Huntingdon Tips on

While you can see the latest tips from Huntingdon above towards the top of this page, we felt it was worthwhile exploring some of the notable races happening here in more detail. You can learn more about the track’s feature contests below. Remember, every race passes the winning post at least twice.

Peterborough Chase

A halfway house for leading two and three mile chasers to meet over an intermediate distance in December. Inaugurated in 1969 and carrying this name since 1979, this two-and-a-half miles Grade 2 contest in December is the flagship race for Huntingdon.

There’s an illustrious roll of honour to the Peterborough Chase, which includes Wayward Lad, Remittance Man, One Man, Edredon Bleu, Best Mate and Monet’s Garden. A number of recent editions have had to move away from Huntingdon, however, due to frost, flooding and waterlogging. Sometimes, it has been abandoned completely.

Punters should bear this in mind with Huntingdon horse tips. Alternative venues for the Peterborough Chase in recent times include Newbury races down in Berkshire, Taunton in the West Country and even Cheltenham. It can be a trial for the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, which has also hosted this race before.

Smart Huntingdon race tips should also consider frontrunning types here. First prize in 2025, when Djelo won this for a second time, was over £46,000, so it’s the most valuable race run at the course. Nicky Henderson and Henrietta Knight share the Peterborough Chase record with eight wins apiece.

Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase

A Listed steeplechase for mares only, also over two-and-a-half miles. Now staged in February after the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown Racecourse, it used to take place in January. It acts as the chief supporting race on the Sidney Banks card.

Past horse racing results show the Lady Protectress being worth more than the over £23,000 the winner receives in 2026 previously. This is due to field size. In 2025, for example, only four mares ran in the race. That means just win only Huntingdon races today tips were available to punters.

The each-way betting market requires more than four runners to exist. In recent season, the likes of Dan Skelton and Gavin Cromwell have won the Lady Protectress a couple of times. Lucy Wadham picked up an enhanced £28,475 in prize money for Telepathique’s victory in 2025.

Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle

Another Listed race now, and the big one in early February at the course. Contested over almost two-and-a-half miles, it is for novice hurdlers and honours local racehorse trainer Sidney Banks, who died in 1973. Initial editions of this event often ended up abandoned due to waterlogging, flooding, frost and/or snow.

Henderson again holds the record in the Sidney Banks with three victories, so all Huntingdon tips today must fear anything sent to the track from his Seven Barrows stable in Lambourn. Shishkin is by far the most famous winner of this race, landing it in 2020 en route to Supreme Novices’ Hurdle glory and six career Grade 1s.

Victory in 2026 comes with £22,780 in prize money, the same as the previous year when Califet En Vol prevailed over No Questions Asked. The front three pulled well clear of the remainder on this occasion, suggesting they were all smart horses.

John Bigg Oxo Handicap Chase

Although only a Class 3 handicap chase and open to runners whose mark doesn’t exceed 140, this two-and-a-half miles contest in March has better prize money than most races taking place at Huntingdon. Lounge Lizard has made it his own with consecutive victories in 2024 and 2025.

Despite the restrictions on which horses can run, Huntingdon racing tips here do need to pick out a useful one or at least something well-handicapped. Henry Daly again secured almost £16,000 in prize money when Lounge Lizard went in again.

Other Huntingdon Races Today of Note

The great thing about Huntingdon races tips is they don’t just have to be on the above. Some less valuable, but still notable contests from the course include the Chatteris Fen Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle in January, if it beats the winter weather, and Henrietta Knight Mares’ Bumper.

This track can teach horses plenty at different stages of their racing careers. From those in juvenile action to old favourites running in a veterans’ handicap chase, Huntingdon has something to offer not just them for turning up, but you as punters.
