Haydock Races Today – See Haydock Tips for Dual-Purpose Merseyside Venue

About halfway between Manchester and Liverpool, you’ll find Haydock races today set in parkland near the Merseyside towns of the same name and Newton-le-Willows. As part of the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, the area has plenty of horse racing history.

History of Haydock Park Racecourse

Race meetings in Newton-le-Willows date back to 1752 and, but for a short break in the 1820s, carried on continuously into the late Victorian era. Goldborne Heath was the site where this forerunner of Haydock Park races took place.

At first popular with members of the Newton Hunt, the Industrial Revolution and its innovations increased the broader appeal of horse racing. As the end of the nineteenth century approached, it became clear something even better organised was necessary.

Parkland belonging to the Leghs family, who on their elevation to the peerage took the name Newton and moved to neighbouring Cheshire, looked ideal for the new Haydock Racecourse. It opened in 1899 and over subsequent decades started hosting races transferred from other tracks or reviving them when their previous homes closed.

Both the Lancashire Oaks and Lancashire Chase, now the Grade 1 Betfair Chase, are examples of this from the old Manchester Racecourse. They are now staples of the programme at Haydock races today in their respective codes.

The Old Newton Cup as its name suggests is one of the oldest events staged at the course. When fellow Merseyside track Aintree races stopped staging Flat racing, Haydock Park was the nearest course to move such events to.

Sydney Sandon did much of the overseeing of the course’s early development as the managing director, chairman and secretary with the parade ring shaded by trees. There are now 32 race days per year from this Jockey Club venue.

Is Haydock Races Today Jumps or Flat?

Home to both Flat and National Hunt racing, Haydock Park has meetings all year round. More on the best of those later. For now, let’s look at the actual track itself.

A complete lap of Haydock’s Round Course is about a mile-and-a-half. Horses run left-handed in a relatively level oval like Newbury races apart from a slight rise turning into the back straight. It is then sharply downhill between the mile-and-a-quarter and mile starts, so suits galloping types.

For Flat sprints over five and six furlongs, there is an Inner track. Adjacent to this is a chute of the same length, which joins the Round Course just over half-a-mile from the winning post. In hurdle races at Haydock today, horses jump six flights on a circuit with three down the back and three more in the home straight.

As for the steeplechases, meanwhile, there are nine fences to cross. Horses face five of these in the back straight with the last being an open ditch. After racing around the home turn, the are four more fences before the line. The second of these and third last in any race over the larger obstacles is another ditch. That leaves two plain fences and a short run-in.

Key Haydock Races Fixtures

There are multiple cards designated with Premier Raceday stats by Great British Racing throughout the year. Six of these in particular are real highlights of the northern racing calendar.

Most but not all of our Haydock racing tips focus on these fixtures. Looking at these in chronological order, the Peter Marsh Chase day in January comes first. The following month is the official Grand National Trial, which has ironically never produced the winner of the Aintree showpiece.

Although there are a number of meetings of Haydock races today in May, their Temple Stakes card towards the end of the month is always the most informative. This is because of the Royal Ascot sprint trials that take place on that day.

Over the summer, the big meeting at Haydock Park is the Old Newton Cup Festival in July. The Saturday card containing that handicap and the Lancashire Oaks, which competes with Sandown races from the Eclipse day, is always a highlight.

Come September, it’s the Haydock Sprint Cup. This Group 1 sprint over six furlongs is the only top-level Flat racing event at the track. Finally, when late November comes around, the Betfair Chase day sees top chasers arrive on Merseyside for an early core National Hunt season battle.

Haydock Sprint Cup

A Group 1 sprint over six furlongs and feature Flat race of Haydock races today. Originally run in November until 1979 when it moved to its current September slot, the Sprint Cup took place around a sharp bend before the Straight Course opened in 1986.

Like the Nunthorpe Stakes at York races, this was also an all-aged race before 1994. Be Friendly, who won the inaugural edition of the Haydock Sprint Cup in 1966, is the only horse to land this event more than once. Famous winners include Boldboy, Green Desert, Danehill, Dayjur, Pipalong, Invincible Spirit, Dream Ahead and Harry Angel.

Smart Haydock horse racing tips here should consider both potentially softer going than the sprinters have underfoot over the summer and draw bias. First prize in 2024 was almost £234,500 with Montassib victorious.

Betfair Chase

Successor to the Lancashire Chase first run at Manchester Racecourse in 1884, which closed in 1963. This modern equivalent had its inaugural edition in November 2005 over a distance of about three miles, then it was extended by a furlong-and-a-half from 2017 onwards.

Although much newer than either the Cheltenham Gold Cup or King George VI Chase at Kempton races, the Betfair Chase is the opening leg of The Jockey Club’s Stayers’ Chase Triple Crown. Multiple winners are common including Kauto Star with a record four victories, and Cue Card and Bristol De Mai with three apiece.

Successful Haydock tips here often focus on horses that go well fresh. Runners can arrive on Merseyside race-fit if they contest the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby races three weeks beforehand. Royale Pagaille won a second Betfair Chase in 2024 and picked up nearly £116,850 in prize money.

Old Newton Cup

Historic handicap over a mile-and-a-half open to older horses on the same card as the Lancashire Oaks in July. For much of its history, three-year-olds could also run in this race, but it closed to them following the last winner from that age bracket in 1991.

The Old Newton Cup qualifies in every respect as a Heritage Handicap, but Haydock Park isn’t bothered about the designation. It last held that status in 2016 and still continues to attract a decent field of runners in races subsequently as a Class 2 handicap.

Useful tips for Haydock today for the Old Newton Cup often highlight four-year-olds with further improvement still in them. However, more mature horses also have a good record, so look out for well-handicapped runners aged five or six too. Plage De Harve triumphed in 2025 and earned £77,310 for victory.

Lancashire Oaks

Dating back to 1857 from Aintree, then moving here in 1965 following a spell at Manchester Racecourse, this mile-and-a-half Group 2 contest for fillies and mares is the feature race of the three-day Old Newton Cup Festival in July. Originally just for three-year-olds, it opened to older females in 1991.

Give Thanks and Park Express are famous Lancashire Oaks heroines who have races in their own right named after them in Ireland. Alpinista is a notable victor from modern times who went on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The best Haydock betting tips here must factor in both past course and distance form, and the significant weight for age allowance younger fillies receive from their elders. Estrange justified a long odds-on price when winning a four-horse edition of the Lancashire Oaks in 2025 and scooped £70,888 for her trouble.

Sandy Lane Stakes

A Group 2 sprint for three-year-olds over six furlongs in May. This is a trial for the Commonwealth Cup and thus forms part of any Royal Ascot tips for that subsequent top level race in the same age bracket. From humble beginnings in 1976, the Sandy Lane earned its current status in 2015.

It can also be a pointer to the Sprint Cup over the same course and distance later in the season, so Haydock races today clearly inform future Group 1s. Marwell was a notable early winner of the Sandy Lane, but its promotion to a Pattern race saw top sprinters like Quiet Reflection, Harry Angel and Hello Youmzain on the roll honour during the late 2010s.

It’s crucial that Haydock horse tips consider runners who need to win to punch their tickets to the Royal meeting here, rather than those simply using it as a prep race for other things. Symbol Of Honour struck in 2025, but couldn’t go on to Ascot as he’s a gelding. Some £70,888 in prize money was consolation for that, however.

Temple Stakes

Transferred from Sandown Park to Haydock Park in 2008, this is the other Group 2 sprint trial for Royal Ascot in May, but open to horses aged three and up over the flying five furlongs. Since the switch of courses, Battaash is the most famous winner of the Temple Stakes and delivered in it twice.

It’s a pure test of speed that horses among Haydock tips today must pass. Winners go on to the King Charles III Stakes (formerly the King’s Stand) during the Royal meeting. Mgheera won the Temple Stakes in 2025 and received £70,888 as first prize.

Peter Marsh Handicap Chase

A Premier Handicap chase over the Betfair Chase course and distance of an extended three miles and a furlong run in January. Inaugurated in 1981, only two horses have won it more than once. They are Jodami and Royale Pagaille.

Often contested on deep winter ground, Haydock race tips must consider horses that stay even further as conditions do really test stamina. Mr Vango delivered under a frontrunning ride in 2025 and received £57,218 in prize money after making all.

Betfair Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle

The chief supporting race on Betfair Chase day in November and a Premier Handicap Hurdle over an extended three miles. It has been a route progressive staying hurdlers like Sam Spinner and Paisley Park took en route to Grade 1 glory later in their careers.

Although now a standard hurdles event at Haydock Park races today, it previously used fixed brush obstacles, rather than flights that can be knocked flat, between 2007 and 2016. Shoot First picked up the £57,218 in prize money for winning this in 2024.

Grand National Trial

Originally established in 1947, this Premier Handicap Chase over an extended three-and-a-half miles in February acts the official trial for the Grand National at fellow Merseyside course Aintree.  It’s an ironic fact that no Trial winner has gone on to land the world’s most famous steeplechase in the same season.

Not even Red Rum, who triumphed here in 1975, managed to land both in the same calendar year. There’s no obvious explanation for this hoodoo outside of different going, the Haydock race taking a lot out of runners, and the increased success for Irish-based horses in the National.

Famous Bridge, a genuine course specialist won in 2025. He scooped almost £57,000 in prize money for that success in the Grand National Trial, but didn’t make the cut for Aintree and pulled up during the Scottish equivalent at Ayr races instead.

Old Borough Cup

Another historic handicap on the Flat, but this one takes place on Sprint Cup day in September. Open to three-year-olds and up over a mile-and-three-quarters, there is also a companion race using the same course and distance for horses of that age also on the card and worth the same prize money.

Haydock Park Racecourse lies within the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens. This race predates the Greater Merseyside and Greater Manchester area authorities, however, with Epic Poet prevailing in 2024 and picking up £51,540 in prize money.

Silver Bowl Handicap

A mile handicap for three-year-olds only on the Sandy Lane and Temple Stakes card in May. Sensible Haydock tips recognise the difference between milers suited by running around a bend as on this course and distance, and those with form on straight tracks. Teroomm triumphed in 2025 and £51,540 in prize money was his reward.

John Of Gaunt Stakes

A Group 3 for older horses over seven furlongs in late May or early June. It remembers the famous Duke Of Lancaster, John Of Gaunt, a key historic figure who founded the Lancastrian branch of the House of Plantagenet. Ten Bob Tony picked up £48,200 for winning this race in 2025.

Lester Piggott Stakes

Formerly the Pinnacle Stakes, this Group 3 trial for the Lancashire Oaks takes place on the John Of Gaunt card. It honours legendary jockey Lester Piggott, while only older fillies and mares can run in the contest.

Rose Of Lancaster Stakes

More Group 3 action now, but over an extended mile-and-a-quarter in August. The Red Rose of Lancaster was the emblem of the cadet branch of the Royal House of the same name that contested the Wars of the Roses with the House of York, which took the white rose as its symbol.

Anmaat is the only dual winner of the race, but other famous horses to land it include Nayef and Jukebox Jury. Originally the Summer Trophy and inaugurated in 1986, it soon switched titles to its current name. First prize in 2024 was £48,200.

Superior Mile

The last of the Group 3s we have Haydock racing tips today for. A mile race for horses aged three and up on Sprint Cup day in September. First run in 2003, Cityscape is by some way the most famous winner. Success in the Superior Mile means £48,200 in prize money with Holloway Boy earning that in 2024.

Swinton Handicap Hurdle

Established in 1978, this Premier Handicap Hurdle over just short of two miles takes place on a mixed card of Flat and jump racing in early May. Intersky Falcon is by far the most famous winner of the Swinton.

Although taking place outside the core part of the National Hunt season, Haydock Park tips always have decent hurdlers to consider on this race. Our Champ delivered in 2025 and picked up £45,560 in Swinton Handicap Hurdle first place prize money.

Supreme Trial Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle

Originally at Doncaster races from 1948 to 1997, then moving to Wetherby and again here in 2005, this Grade 2 trial for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle during the Cheltenham Festival takes place in January on Peter Marsh Chase day. Jonbon is the most high-profile winner since this contest switched to Merseyside.

Peddlers Cross and Neon Wolf are other modern era Rossington Main winners wo ran well at Cheltenham, so horse racing tips for Haydock here can produce fine performers on grander stages. Dedicated Hero won £42,700 in prize money for his 2025 victory.

Albert Bartlett Prestige Novices’ Hurdle

Inaugurated at Newbury, then moved to Chepstow races and finally settling at Haydock in 2001, this Grade 2 novice hurdle over an extended three miles on the Grand National Trial card in February is a trial for the Albert Bartlett on Gold Cup day during the Cheltenham Festival.

Neptune Collonges is the Prestige’s most famous winner since the race arrived on Merseyside. Fellow Grand National hero Miinnehoma also appears on the roll of honour before the switch. Battle Born Lad became the latest winner in 2025 with almost £40,000 in prize money awarded for first place.

Hedge Of Oak Stakes

A brand new Listed race for older fillies and mares over the extended mile-and-a-quarter on the Sandy Lane and Temple Stakes day in late May. Only added to the programme in 2025, Diamond Rain became its inaugural winner and picked up almost £39,700 in prize money.

Rendlesham Hurdle

Transferred to Haydock Park from Kempton Park in 2006, this Grade 2 hurdle race over an extended three miles is on the Grand National Trial card in February. Baracouda is the best known staying hurdler to win it in this event’s history.

Shock results in the Rendlesham Hurdle aren’t unusual, so Haydock tips today must consider outsiders. Gwennie May Boy won it in 2025 and scooped prize money of £34,170.

Other Haydock Races Today
