History of Clonmel Racecourse
Powerstown Park in the Suir valley has hosted horse racing since 1856, according to the track’s official website. That means the location of Clonmel races today has been staging meetings for the last 170 years. This town in County Tipperary has also become known for a couple of other things in the intervening period.
Clonmel Oil is a big local industry and they sponsor the course’s biggest race. More on that later. Clonmel is also famous as the home of Bulmers and Magners cider, one of the most popular alcoholic beverages of its kind on the market in the British Isles.
The Tipperary Perpetual Cup, a low-grade handicap on the Flat, is the oldest race taking place at Clonmel. It’s the National Hunt action held here that draws wider attention to the track, however, with two graded steeplechases during the autumn.
Is Clonmel Races Today Flat or Jumps?
Although both Flat and National Hunt racing happen at Clonmel, the course is synonymous with the latter code. This is because of the Clonmel Oil Steeplechase run here in November. Horses race right-handed around Powerstown Park over an undulating circuit of a mile-and-a-quarter with tight turns for a full lap.
There is a steep climb in the back straight, then a sharp descent rounding the home turn before a stiff uphill finish to the winning post. This is just like Thurles races across County Tipperary. The hurdles track has six flights on a complete circuit with horses jumping one down the side before a line three down the back and then two more in the home stretch.
Clonmel Racecourse has both Inner and Outer circuit for its steeplechasing events. If racing on the inside track, there are just six fences on a full lap. After one down the side, there’s three in the back straight with the middle in the line being an open ditch. That leaves just two plain fences after turning for home before the line.
On the outer chase course, meanwhile, there are seven fences. There’s an extra obstacle in the back straight for horses to jump. Using this circuit, the open ditch is the third of four fences on that far side. Downhill parts of the Clonmel racetrack can get very heavy, creating a stiff finish to events.
Key Clonmel Races Fixtures
The Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase card on a Thursday in early November is as good as the horse racing gets here. Supporting the track’s feature contest is a Listed race for mares only over the same course and distance.
Later on in the core jumps season, there’s Grade 3 action from Clonmel in February courtesy of a staying novice hurdle. There are a number of other minor meetings from both codes we provide racing tips for as well, but that is the best of it. Clonmel believes in quality over quantity.

Clonmel Oil Chase
A Grade 2 steeplechase taking place in November over an extended two-and-a-half miles or two miles and five furlongs, depending on which course is in use. This is the most valuable contest of all Clonmel races today. Course specialists excel in this with Dorans Pride landing a record four consecutive editions between 1997 and 2000.
Other famous horses on the roll of honour include Imperial Call, Beef Or Salmon, Edredon Bleu, War Of Attrition, Sizing Europe, Douvan and Allaho. Willie Mullins extended his amazing record in the Clonmel Oil to ten victories when Il Etait Temps made a successful reappearance in 2025 and picked up €35,400 in prize money like Saint Sam before him.
Most tips for Clonmel today focus on Mullins mounts as a result. All 10 wins for the stable have come since 2013, with only Noel Meade, Mouse Morris and Joseph O’Brien runners stopping a clean sweep. There’s usually a small field here, so that only aids Mullins in his dominance of the contest.
Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle
A Grade 3 novice hurdle over three miles in February. Attaining its current status in 2013, smart Clonmel tips today for the race registered as the Powerstown Novice Hurdle should focus on runners from the top Irish National Hunt yards. Willie Mullins has a record seven wins in this contest, most recently with Allaho in 2019.
Henry De Bromhead and Gordon Elliott have four wins apiece here. Transferred to Punchestown and Navan in recent years when the February fixture has been abandoned, first prize in 2025 was €20,650 when Ballybow made all the running and justified a Starting Price of 5/6 in a three-horse race.
T. A. Morris Memorial Mares Chase
A Listed steeplechase only open to mares over the same course and distance as the Clonmel Oil Chase during that meeting in November. First run in 2004, it briefly became a graded race before returning to its current status in 2017. Willie Mullins always aims a smart mare at this, so Clonmel race tips will always favour his entries.
The roll of honour includes dual winners Blazing Tempo and Shattered Love, but also Vroum Vroum Mag and Allegorie De Vassy in recent season. Spindleberry, winner of the Gold Cup race at Fairyhouse earlier in the year, triumphed in 2025 picked up the €16,226 first prize in 2025 despite carrying a big penalty for that previous success.
