Brighton Races Today – Read Brighton Racing Tips from South Coast Track
Though it has a grand history, Brighton races today operate on a small scale, both in terms of the prize money on offer and the quality of the action. This seaside track is just a mile from the coast and within easy reach from Greater London.
In this guide, we explore everything that you need to know about the course, including information on the configuration, fixture list and races that we cover with our Brighton racing tips on the Flat.
History of Brighton Racecourse
The course is just a mile north-east from the centre of Brighton. This track benefits from being close to major transport links, while also being one of the most picturesque settings for racing in the UK, on the edge of the South Downs.
Records of racing at this site date back to 1783, but racing at Brighton dates further back than that, to the end of the Stuart Dynasty in 1713 and the Hanoverian Succession the following year.
Legend has it that King George IV, when still the Prince of Wales, invented hurdle racing at Brighton. A grandstand came in 1788, only to burn down in 1796, but Brighton remained a home for top class racing throughout the Regency Period.
Crowds of over 20,000 were common at Brighton after World War II and as recently as the 1960s, Classic trials were held at the course.
Since then, it has steadily become a less fashionable course. Now owned by the Arena Racing Company, Brighton races today is one of the smaller racecourses in the UK, with low quality racing and prize money on offer.
Is Brighton Races Today Jumps or Flat?
Though it is the apparent birthplace of hurdle racing, only Flat racing fixtures take place at Brighton these days.
An undulating, left-handed, horseshoe-shaped course with races of up to a mile-and-a-half, it is one of the few UK courses to not form a complete circuit. This makes it similar to Epsom on the Surrey Downs.
The final straight is about half-a-mile long and features a steep descent, followed by a less steep uphill climb to the winning post. This course can suit handy types, which is a consideration when making our tips for Brighton.
Key Brighton Races Fixtures
The Arena Racing Company have scheduled 21 race fixtures at Brighton for 2025, which take place between April and October. So, over the summer months, you’ll never be far from the next set of Brighton horse racing tips from Racing Tipster.
Like many racecourses, Brighton organises events to reach beyond horse racing enthusiasts. There is a Retro Raceday in May and a Family Fun Day in August, along with a regular schedule of antique fairs hosted at the race tracks.
The race days which host the key events in the Brighton horse racing calendar, come in early August. On the first Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of that month, the Brighton Festival of Racing takes place.
This three-day festival forms the remaining second half of the old ‘Sussex Fortnight’, of which Glorious Goodwood is the most famous part.
