In our guide to this racecourse we’re going to take you through the history, the races that you can expect to see there and information on our Bangor tips.
History of Bangor on Dee Racecourse
Racing first took place at Bangor on 25th February, 1859. The main event on that first race meeting was the Grand Wynnstay Steeplechase.
That historical race came about in order to settle a wager between Lloyd Kenyon of Gredington, and Richard Myddelton of Chirk Castle. Based in Bangor-on-Dee, near Wrexham in North Wales, the sense of history at Bangor races today is aided by it being the only racecourse in the UK that doesn’t feature a grandstand.
Bangor Racecourse plays a pivotal role in the story of former champion jockey turned bestselling thriller writer, Dick Francis. His first race came at the course and his first winner came in a hurdle race there in 1947.
In 2002, a £2,500,000 deal saw a purchase from the Chester Race Company. To this day, Chester Racecourse remains the sister track to Bangor.
Other major milestones in recent years include the creation of Bangor Bet in 2012. This saw Bangor become the first track in 80 years to run without the Tote and its pari-mutuel pool betting on course.
In 2019, a deal was struck that sees racing from Bangor televised on Sky Sports Racing. You can watch all of their meetings on that channel.
Is Bangor Races Today Jumps or Flat?
Bangor is a left-handed National Hunt only course that hosts hurdle races, steeplechases and bumpers. We officially call the latter National Hunt Flat races.
It is a flat track in a triangular shape, featuring a long run-in. There are some tight turns along the way. The aforementioned Dick Francis claimed that Bangor was his favourite racecourse, citing the flatness as a quality that he valued.
A full circuit of the course is about a mile-and-a-half round. In hurdle races, there are six per circuit and nine fences for chases. Open ditches are the third in the line of three after the winning post and third of four down the other side of the course.
Our Bangor on Dee tips take account of the fact that races at this course are quite a test of jumping. Horse racing tipsters also pay attention to the fact that there is generally a lot of rain in this area of Wales. Make sure that you check out the going at Bangor races today, before committing to a bet, as conditions can turn rather heavy.
